Yo y mi mujer in the Hood

This is our report for the week ending the 9th of Feb 2025. Last week we had a great experience finding family names for 2 friends who are new members of the Church. This week we were able to go to the Temple with one of them. The one that didn’t come had a last-minute schedule change. The missionaries in the office were the missionaries who taught them and so they were able to go to the Temple also. It wasn’t real clear whether we were invited to come or not. We have all heard of FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) I have FSUWBI ( Fear of Showing Up Without Being Invited). We sort of decided that since the Elders had spent so long with these 2 new members we might be crowding in on their glory moment. However, at the last minute we decided that these young missionaries are just young and weren’t really thinking like that and in fact, weren’t really thinking at all (like most young men 6 years out of Primary).

We decided we needed to go and provide a little shepherding. As it turned out, our shepherding and service was needed. We were able to help get the names printed off and make sure the right person did her names. Just before our turn at the font, there was a Bishop with the youth of his ward. He baptized them all ( about 15) for people whose names were provided by his Ward. They all did at least 5 names each. Afterwards I helped him perform the confirmations and he wanted to be the voice for them all. Anyway, It turned out great and we were glad we followed the Spirit instead of giving into our pride.

We continue to do house inspections and they are getting much better. We think the word is getting out that the missionaries must prepare before the inspections. The status quo is no longer good enough. We can sum it up this way. House inspections are way more fun when the houses are clean. We were 8 for 8 this week!

On Saturday we attended the Baptism of the 2 daughters of someone who is in Hermana Borup’s English Connect class. They live in Mira Flores. If you have been to Lima on vacation you have been to Mira Flores. It’s a different world. The chairs in the Chapel were even different (more posh!). She is in the English Connect class because her brother is in our ward and she visits him often, Hermana Borup invited her to join the class. The next day after her daughter’s baptisms, their cousins who live in our Ward were also baptized. The member in our Ward is the Uncle to both sets of kids. He is one of the most committed enthusiastic members of the church I have ever met. We love that man and his great example.

On Sunday we were able to take the Sacrament to a member of our Ward that has had to stay home because her mother is dying and needs her care. Her husband who is also a very committed member and I were able to administer the Sacrament to her. It was a very special experience for all of us. Her mother passed away a few days later. Her mother was in her 90s and was baptized this past year.

The big news of the week is that I went viral. I filmed and narrated a video to help non-native English speakers get access to EnglishConnect using their phones. As I filmed it, my narration was in Spanish without notes. In other words, the Spainsh was awful. We developed a form that allows the missionaries to report their progress in EnglishConnect and shared it as part of the video. The other Senior couple in our Mission shared the video with their niece who is over EnglishConnect in the Mexico Area. She asked me if she could share it with all the Language Specialists in the Mexico Area. Of course, I said yes, but warned her that they might (probably) want to redo the narration. SO there you have it, my bad Spanish is being laughed at in other missions also!

We love being here together as missionaries. We love to work with the missionaries and we love to work with the new members. They are a  giant light and example in our lives.

Until next time!
