| A view from one of the missionaries' houses. |
I’m not sure if I have mentioned this or not (I’m not going to go back and look), but a few weeks ago, we were called to teach English Connect to the youth of our Ward. It has been fun to meet with the youth each week and help them do something that can change their lives. We have between 8 and 12 people show up each week. They have all levels of English ability, but everyone is learning something. One of the young men is someone we had not seen at church, or at least don’t remember seeing him. His name is Marlon. It is easy to see that he is well-liked by the other youth, especially the girls. His English is ok and his attitude is better. This week, we found out why we have never seen him in our Ward.
We were invited to his baptism. He doesn’t live in our War,d but many of his friends do. He was being taught by the Elders in his Ward (Deseret). One of the things we have noticed about many of the new members is how eager they are to share the Gospel with their family and friends. Marlon has a friend in our Ward who is a new member. His name is Diego. It’s also easy to see that Diego is popular among his peers, especially the girls. They are both 17. Marlon showed up to his baptism with a brand-new suit. He looked like a future missionary, and at 17, the future part of that is not too far off. The other great surprise was to see Diego (a member for about 1.5 months), a new priest, perform the baptism. It is a sign of true conversion when the new member is quick to share the good news with others. The example is inspiring.
Another example of new member missionary work is one of our new friends, Miguel. He is Sophia's uncle, one of our EnglishConnect students. She has been a member for just over a year now and is the Young Women’s class president. We think she is the only member of her family who is a member, at least up until Miguel got baptised. We admire her. I’m not sure I remember a day when she was not at church. She is quick to serve whenever something needs to be done at a ward activity. She is another great example of conversion.
We have another new friend who is in his 50s and was baptized a couple of weeks ago. He is a musician by profession. His name is Pablo. The Hermanas in his area found him by just knocking on his door. Missionaries carry with them a spirit that isn’t very hard to see. There is a light and joy that is visible. It is especially visible in the Hermanas. The Elders have it also, but it is just a little extra noticeable in the Hermanas. Hermana Borup and I often ask ourselves how someone would not want to listen to their message if they came to your door. Pablo was going through some health challenges, which turned into some employment challenges. The Hermanas helped him turn to God. It was a joy to meet with him and see his optimistic outlook on life.
The Stake President came to our Ward this week. He even conducted the meeting. We were certain that we were going to get a Bishopric. Nope! It was a false alarm. The Bishop of our Ward was released about 1 year ago now. The Stake President was told by the Area Presidency that any Bishop who has more than 5 years needs to be released immediately, so they did. And now here we are, a year later, without a Bishop. The Ward goes on, but you can tell there is a hole. We have heard rumors that names are being considered, but we still don’t have a Bishop. The Ward members are another example for us of faithful members.
I’m going to end this here. Our weeks continue to be busy and inspiring. We are grateful to be here and be part of this great work. The gathering of Israel. The work becomes clearer to us each week.
So until next week.
