Wilson having too much fun with Boobie and Pop-pop

This is our report from the week of Dec 29, 2024 - Jan 5, 2025. Yep, another week behind. For most of this week, we were just trying to keep up with Wilson, the 2-year-old. That’s right, it took two of us, and here it is a week later, and we’re still tired! We had a great time though and it was worth the energy spent. Madison and Corbin spent several days in Cusco and Machu Picchu so we had that time with Wilson. He loved riding in the moto taxi and we walked around the neighborhood several times. We live on the 3rd floor and have windows that overlook the street. Wilson loved sitting at the window and saying “hola” to everyone as they passed by. I’m sure it was a treat for them to see a little blond 2-year-old saying “hi”.

Madison and Corbin returned to Lima in time to experience New Year's Eve. Wow! It felt like a war zone here. There were about 15 minutes of fireworks and firecrackers to celebrate the new year.  We were told that just like Christmas Eve everyone stays up all night and that the streets would be quiet on New Year's Day. We had the great idea of going to the zoo on New Year's Day since everyone who stayed up all night would be sleeping in all day. Wrong!, I think it was probably the busiest day of the year. Apparently, out of a city of 11 million, a few didn’t sleep all day and they all thought that it would be a good day to go to the zoo also. Everywhere there was grass and shade, though, there were families having picnics and sleeping. The zoo in Lima is very good and apparently popular also.

We have always wanted to go to a hill called Cerro San Cristobal. It is a 1,500 ft high hill in a rough area of Lima. Since Lima is basically at sea level the view from the hill was great. The ride to the top was almost as fun as the view. The way to the top is through a rough neighborhood with very narrow roads that were steep.

One of the duties we have taken on is helping missionaries with language learning, especially helping native Spanish speakers learn English. One of our goals is to talk to every missionary every 6 weeks to encourage them to be consistent in their language study. This has been a fun thing to do. We love this one-on-one contact. Missionaries have hard times and bad days, but in general, they are happy. They have a positive perspective in general. This has been a great way to get to know these wonderful servants of our Heavenly Father. Since the country was shut down for the holidays we spent a lot of time catching up on these language study check-ups.

We love our time here as missionaries. The highlight has always been meeting new people and sharing our love and God’s love with them. This week was filled with that and we were able to spend time with our family. We miss our friends, but we love the blessing of being able to make more here.

Until next time, your friends,

Hermana y Elder Borup
