| Caroling with the district |
This is going to be a short one. I’m already more than a week behind. This post is for the week ending Dec 15, 2024. The biggest event of the week was transfers. We had some really great missionaries go home. It seems to get a little harder each time because these were missionaries that we have spent more time with. When missionaries get to the end of their time they seem so strong to us. They can do hard things and they can do it with a spirit of love and commitment. They can teach with power and authority and they can invite with compassion and love. We are going to miss them all. We hope we get to see them some time in the future.
During the month of December the missionaries in our mission get to use Facebook as a missionary tool. Normally our missionaries do not use it. Mainly I think because they have a lot of teaching opportunities without it. However, Christmas time gives them the opportunity to share wonderful messages of the hope that Christ brings to all. They also get to go caroling in their districts (usually 6-12 missionaries). We got to go out with our district this week. It was great fun. Caroling is not a common thing here. At one point we just started singing in a park and when we finished the first song the people around us wanted us to sing more. It really is an inspiring sight to see these young people who are dedicating their lives to bring the good news to others, out singing with big smiles and pretty good voices.
They finally got my name right in the driver's license system, so I was able to take the written test. There are 40 questions on the test. The questions are taken from 200 possible questions that are all published online. They are multiple choice. The 40 questions are the exact questions online, but the order of the possible responses are changed. That’s it. The test writers know how people actually drive here versus what the rules are. There are always possible choices that reflect the real world driving. Like: When you want to turn left at an intersection, you should: One of the choices is pull over to the right lane, honk your horn and proceed to turning left. They should have included “don’t make eye contact because it is a sign of weakness and you will never make a turn if you do. The test was in Spanish. I had to learn a whole new vocabulary. I passed.
The week ended with a wonderful Christmas dinner with our Mission Leaders. Hermana and President Manly, who are amazing Mission Leaders. They lead with energy, love and faith. I remember as a young missionary how I looked up to my Mission Leaders. They were great people that deserved being looked up to. The Manlys are also. These missionaries are in good care physically, emotionally and spiritually. We see our biggest job as trying to stay out of their way. We don’t want to mess things up. They have made us feel like so far we haven’t. No doubt, the hardest calling in the Church is Mission Leader. We are grateful for all the Mission Leaders we have had here, in the Dominican Republic and for me, in New Zealand. ( NO hablan Español allá).
Ok that’s it for now. The next one will be out soon.
Your friends,
Hermana Y Elder Borup
