| Dressed for Halloween |
This was anything but a normal week. Come to think of it, I don't think there is such a thing as a normal week when you are on a mission. This week we had Halloween, transfers and Jesus baptizing Jesus. I'm pretty sure that if your name is Jesus you need to be a member of His Church. It seems to be happening at an accelerated pace in the Lima Peru North Mission. As we have said many times, most of those joining the church are young adult age. This past week one two of the Baptisms we went to were young adults named Jesus. One of those was baptized by a member whose name is Jesus. I used to think it was strange to name a child Jesus. I'm not so sure I think that anymore. I wonder if having that name creates a higher level of interest in seeking The Jesus, a desire to learn more of Him. I think it is working because many Jesus´ are learning more of Him through the missionaries.
Halloween, we didn't know what to expect. It was wonderful. I'm not sure how long they have the tradition of trick or treating here but the kids get dressed up and go door to door to get candy just like they do at home. Well not just like. They go door to door but not house to house. They go business to business. On Halloween night, any street that had businesses on it was full of kids in great costumes going from business to business where they were rewarded with candy. No one goes house to house, I think mostly because most houses are secure behind more than one door.
The Hermanas in our Ward organized a Trunk or Treat missionary activity at the church. Everyone in the Ward that owns a car (5) brought their cars to the church. The church is on a street with several businesses so there were many kids with their parents looking for Halloween treats. The church property has a fence around it and the parking lot also acts as the soccer field and basketball court. The cars were all decorated with amazing balloon arrangements. We didn't get there early enough to see them make arrangements but they look like they took a lot of time. At the appointed hour the gates were opened. As soon as those passing by realized there was candy in the cars, there was a mad rush! It was super fun! We had hundreds of trick or treaters! The missionaries greeted everyone. I would call the activity a big success!
This week was our 3rd transfer since we have been here. It was another big one. There were 16 new missionaries and only 4 that went home. In just 3 months since we have been here our mission went from a rather small mission (as far as number of missionaries) to an almost big mission. It is so fun to meet the new missionaries. You can see the mix of emotions on them, fear, excitement, exhaustion and curiosity. They all have a mix but the relative levels of each emotion is different in each missionary. It is a joy to watch them as they figure things out and eventually become amazing productive Spanish speaking missionaries.
I think that will be all for now. We love serving here with amazing missionaries, and amazing missionary leaders. It's a blessing to our lives.
Your friends,
Hermana Y Elder Borup
