A trip to the Temple

A Week of Missionary Work


This place is starting to grow on us. I love to live in the city. Hermana Borup is not so much a city person. To me, there’s something about the pace and energy of a big city that I just like. Every corner and intersection is busy and never the same. There are different street vendors and the traffic is constantly changing pace. It’s just fun. Because I’m late writing this I’m going to keep it short. I just want to talk about a couple of our missionary experiences. 


When we received our call to LIma our first thought was “What can we do to help the Church in an area where the Church is so strong.”  After speaking to the Mission Leaders we got excited about helping new members stay on the covenant path. It can be hard to change your life and stay on the path. One of our goals is to help new members get to the Temple soon after their baptism. WE INVITE EVERYONE. This week went to the Temple with one of our new friends. He is coming from being a not-very religious person. He was a little suspicious about the Temple so we invited him just to come and walk around the temple grounds with us and maybe even look inside. He has a recommend. We met at the bus stop and walked down to the Temple together. As we walked around the Temple grounds, the spirit and pace differed from the outside world. It was obvious. We went to the front desk and asked to go see the baptismal font. They weren’t sure but after a few minutes, a member of the Temple Presidency came in and told us of course. It was impressive. The spirit of the Temple is Powerful. He told us he was ready to come back and do baptisms. 


This week we went back with the Hermanas and taught Hermana Borup’s friend. We taught (well mostly the Hermanas taught, we added a few words in basic Spanish) her family about the First Vision and the Restoration. Since we have a tablet we were able to show them The Restoration video. It’s a little longer but gives some background. The spirit was strong. Again there was this amazing contrast between the outside buz and the peaceful spirit you could feel as this young family learned about the restored Gospel of Jesus Christ. I felt impressed to talk about what an amazing story this is. We believe that God and Christ appeared to Joseph Smith and later he was visited by an Angel who gave him plates of gold that had words from ancient American Prophets written on them. And then there were more visits from John the Baptist and Peter James and John. I said we are all crazy to believe such an amazing story or we have found something that is beyond price. It is either true or it is not. As we shared our testimonies with them you could feel the spirit testifying to them. It’s the best feeling in the world! As we left she wanted to know where she could watch the video we shared. Her 15-year-old daughter was not there and she wanted to make sure to share it with her. We sent her the link. By the time we got home, she sent Hermana Borup a text saying they just watched the video with her daughter and loved it again!


Two experiences where we could feel the peace of the spirit as compared to the chaos of the outside world, one on the grounds of a Holy Temple and the other in the front room of a sweet humble family. Both felt like Holy Ground!

 4-6-25 On their way to Machu Picchu One of the great things about being a Senior Missionary is that family can come and visit. This week was filled with a lot of activities with McKenzie and her family, and most of those were out of our Mission. (another advantage of being a Senior Missionary) Our part of town isn’t the most glamorous part of town, but it is “our” part of town. We didn’t choose to serve here in this little part of Lima. All the places we did “pick” were nothing like the Peru LIma North Mission. but we are so grateful that we have the chance to serve here in our little way. That being said, other than a moto taxi ride to the office and an introduction to our little local markets, we spent most of our time with them showing them the sites of Lima, which are ALL outside of our mission.  McKenzie and Luke are not idle travelers. 4-13-25 A view from one of the missionaries' houses.  I’m not sure if I have mentioned this or not (I’m not going to go back and look), but a few weeks ago, we were called to teach English Connect to the youth of our Ward. It has been fun to meet with the youth each week and help them do something that can change their lives. We have between 8 and 12 people show up each week. They have all levels of English ability, but everyone is learning something. One of the young men is someone we had not seen at church, or at least don’t remember seeing him. His name is Marlon. It is easy to see that he is well-liked by the other youth, especially the girls. His English is ok and his attitude is better. This week, we found out why we have never seen him in our Ward. We were invited to his baptism. He doesn’t live in our War,d but many of his friends do. He was being taught by the Elders in his Ward (Deseret). Off to do house inspections with Elder Napa For the week ending Jan 12, 2025 Everything seems to be getting  back to normal after Christmas and New Years. If there is such a thing as normal. Maybe there isn’t a normal as a Senior Missionary in Lima Peru. We still call missionaries to encourage and invite them to be consistent and effective in language study. This week we started a new task, inspecting missionary apartments. The goal is to do several each week so every 2 transfers (a transfer is 6 weeks) all the apartments can be inspected. The primary purpose of the inspections as we see it is to make sure the apartments are safe and have everything that the missionaries need to be healthy and happy. With over 70 houses things break every week. Some missionaries are really good about letting us know about those things and  others seem to be unaware.  The second reason to do the inspections is to encourage the missionaries to keep their apartments clean.
