The Noise , Noise, Noise, Noise!

The original Peru Lima Temple

The Noise, Noise, Noise

Life in Lima is starting to feel normal except…a few things.  We can’t get our heads around the noise at night. This week our neighbor (the door across from ours) decided to have a party. It started at 9:30. They cleared some furniture into the hallway and left the door open…  No big deal. But they had a very powerful stereo with very loud music. The music made our floor bounce. The worst part however was the DJ. The apartment is only about 1000 sq feet and THEY HAD a DJ with full volume speakers. Everyone in their house could hear him as well as everyone within a square mile. It only lasted until about 11:30 but that’s when the rave party started across the street. Our whole building was shaking from that. It lasted until 3 am. I guess we’re old.

One of our mission assignments is to teach an Emotional Resilience class for the new missionaries. There are 10 lessons and are found in the Gospel Library. They teach strategies for how to deal with difficult emotions. All the new missionaries have to go through all the lessons. We are the facilitators. We do a class in English and then do it again in Spanish. This week our class in Spanish went way better than the class in English. I wish it was because our Spanish is so much better (It is a little better every week) but it was because everything that could go wrong with the technology did go wrong during the English session. It was all ironed out by the time we did the Spanish session. We love teaching the class. This last week it was about addiction, how to deal with it, where to go for help, and how to help others deal with it.

The Church is growing in Peru. The largest group of new members are between 18 and 30 years old. They seem to be searching. Many of them have parents who belong to a church (mostly Catholic) but were never really active in their church. They believe in God but they don’t know him. Many aren’t looking but when it is presented to them they find truth and peace. This week we had a young man in this age group come to our house. He was recently baptized and has received the Priesthood. He is full of questions and enthusiasm. It is fun to share answers and to show him how he can find the answers himself. We have been spending a lot of time showing new members like him how to use the Gospel Library app. How to mark and write notes about scriptures, how to find videos, and other help while you are reading the scriptures. It’s been really fun.

Oh yeah, this week we had lunch with Sister Bednar. We thought Elder Bednar was going to be there, but he didn’t make it. Here’s the background. Our neighbors the Ransoms, son-in-law is the director of Luz de Las Naciones. An amazing musical and cultural celebration, celebrating the Latin American cultures. His name is Israel. Israel was born in Lima and was here to pick up some costumes for the production. He arranged for us to meet him for lunch. As we entered the restaurant, he ran into a high school friend who is a member of the church. She told him that the Bednars were coming to the same restaurant for lunch. When we were seated we could see a group of women which included Sister Bednar eating halfway across the room. Elder Bednar never came. We think eating in the same room counts as eating with someone. You might feel differently. Too bad!

Saturday was our anniversary. We had a great day planned. We started out hiring a local friend to drive us to Miraflores, which is an hour's drive but a world away from where we live. We met up with Jill Williams, Lynette’s cousin who is the throwing coach for the USA U20 Track and field team. They were in Lima for the world championships. We took her and another member who is an athletic trainer for the team and BYU, to see the Lima Temple. Temples are always a place of refuge. Even the Temple grounds. After visiting the Temple we took them back so they could get pictures with the team. We rubbed shoulders with greatness for the 2nd time in the week. That level of athlete always looks so impressive. We had lunch together and then our friend brought us home. We had a lesson in the afternoon which was really the highlight and then the plan was to have a nice dinner and then a movie to end a perfect anniversary. But God’s plans are always better than our plans. The sisters told us that one of them is sick and they need to go to some teaching appointments. They asked if we could stay with the sick sister while they met with their friends. Of course, we said yes. That started at 4:30 and ended at 9:30. We were too tired for dinner or a movie, but felt honored to serve the Lord in some small way. If we had to do it over again we would do it the same way. We will still have a nice dinner and a movie, that’s important too. But there was something special about this anniversary.

Another great week!
