And Off We Go!
On July 7th we were set apart as Missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. There is something magic about being called to represent the restored church and to have this plaque on our chests. Like all missionaries we started out by learning our duty in the Missionary Training Center (MTC). The instruction was amazing. It was centered on inviting others to come to Christ. Even after serving as a Senior Missionary once before, we learned a lot and loved our time in the MTC. However there were a few days when I was minus a companion. Hermana Borup decided she would get some of her training online so she got Covid and missed 4 days.Acording to her, getting training in your pajamas wasn’t all bad.
While we were in the MTC, we had a chance to speak to our Mission Leaders, EL Presidente y Hermana Manly from Washington State. They are just what you want from mission leaders. They love the Lord and they love the missionaries and they are fun. A great combination for leaders in the church. They told us that they may need us to help in the mission office for awhile because a couple had to go home earlier than expected and their replacements don’t come until September. It will be good while we get our arms around our other assignments.
We have been asked to help new and returning members get to the Temple and help them start getting involved in family history. It’s going to take some time to get the momentum going because so many are joining the church there is a lot to do.
We arrived in Peru Monday night the 22nd of July. The Manlys picked us up at 11:30, then brought us to our apartment and then had to driveback to their home which is an hour away. It was super kind and made us feel very welcome. Our apartment is great! We have power 24 hr a day, we have a clothes washer and dryer, and industrial sized oven and stove, filtered water, 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms with heated (yes HEATED) water. And wait! That’s not all, we have internet, a heater, and lots of appliances. We are set!
The best part so far is the missionaries. They are full of the light and love of our Savior. I don’t know how anyone can turn them away but apparently that happens all the time. Their enthusiasm for the work is contagious. The second best part so far is the people of Peru. They are warm and friendly. They love their country, their families and God. Oh and in case you didn’t know they all speak Spanish which can be a challenge. We both feel like we can understand the Spanish here much better than 5 years ago.
The missionaries here teach a lot. Many are joining the restored church each week. They are making conventants through Baptism to follow the Savior and do their best to live in His Way. It is a blessing to be a small part of this great work!
Love,
Hermana Y Elder Borup
